Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "Islam began as something strange and will become strange again just as it began." I think Hafs said: So glad tidings be for the strangers. It was asked: Who are the strangers? He said: Those who have left their tribes (the poor and travelers).
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2789)
Imam Darimi rahimahullah holds the view that from “Tuba lil-ghuraba” to the end of the hadith is the statement of the narrator of the hadith, Hafs ibn Ghiyath, but in Sahih Muslim it is narrated marfu‘an from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu.
And the meanings of “Tuba” are happiness and joy, and some have said it means Paradise, and some have said it is a tree that is in Paradise.
And Allah knows best.
This hadith alludes to the fact that Islam began from Madinah, meaning it began with those people who migrated from Makkah to Madinah, and they were strangers and travelers, having left their homeland, and then it will be the same again, meaning in the end times Islam will shrink and contract until it returns to Madinah, and disbelief will dominate the whole world, and those who are Muslim, out of fear of the disbelievers, will flee and gather in Madinah.
Qadi ‘Iyad said: The meaning of the hadith is that at first Islam began with a small number of people, and then in the end times it will similarly shrink and remain among a few people (Wahidi), and some commentators have written that Islam began with poor and destitute people, such as Sayyiduna Bilal and Sayyiduna Suhayb radi Allahu anhum, and then it will return to such poor people, meaning the wealthy and prominent will abandon it and only the poor will embrace it, and this will occur near the Day of Judgment. At present, Islam and Muslims are present in every corner of the world, and even if only in name, there are more than sixty Islamic countries in every region, among which there are both rich and poor.
