Hadith 2789

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The religion is (all about) sincere advice.” We asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Sincere advice to whom? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “To Allah, to His Messenger, to His Book, to the leaders of the Muslims, and to the common Muslims.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2787 to 2789)

This hadith is from the comprehensive statements (jawami‘ al-kalim) and among those four hadiths which encompass all matters of Islam.

And "nasihah" (sincere advice) is such a comprehensive word that it covers truthfulness, sincerity, goodwill, and all virtues. Sincere advice (nasihah) for Allah means to have correct faith in Him, to worship Him with sincerity, not to associate anyone with Him, to follow His commands, and to abstain from His prohibitions.

Sincere advice for the Messenger is to affirm his prophethood, obey his commands and instructions, follow his Sunnah, and avoid innovations (bid‘ah).

Sincere advice for the Book of Allah: to affirm it, to be consistent in its recitation, to avoid every kind of distortion and alteration—whether verbal or in meaning—and to act upon and implement its rulings.

Sincere advice for the Muslim rulers means to assist them in truth, to obey them in matters that are not sinful, and if they deviate from the straight path, to enjoin them to what is right, and to avoid rebellion and uprising against them—except if they commit and openly display clear disbelief (kufr sariḥ).

Sincere advice for the general Muslims is to guide them correctly for the betterment of their worldly and religious affairs, to enjoin them to good and forbid them from evil, to love them, and to refrain from harming them.
