Hadith 2785

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for something, and he gave it to me. I asked again, and he gave it to me again. I asked once more, and he gave it to me again. I asked yet again, and he still gave it to me. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hakim! This wealth is indeed lush and sweet, but whoever takes it with a generous heart, there is blessing in his wealth. And whoever takes it with greed, there is no blessing in his wealth. His example is like that of a person who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand." (That is, the giving hand is better than the receiving hand.)

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2784)

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam radi Allahu anhu was among the highly virtuous, God-fearing, and intelligent Companions. He lived a long life, remaining alive until the era of Muawiyah, and after the Beloved of the Universe, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he never extended his hand in need before anyone until his death. To the extent that the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, said: "O people! Bear witness that I am giving to Hakim," but he would always refuse to accept wealth and riches.

In this hadith, the Sage of Humanity, the Noble Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, has presented the example of the content and the greedy: whoever, in matters of worldly wealth, acts with patience and contentment (qana‘ah) and protects himself from the disease of greed and avarice, for him the doors of blessings will be opened, and even a small amount of wealth will suffice for him.

The greedy: His belly can never be filled, even if he were to acquire all the wealth of the world; he will still remain caught up in the cycle of seeking more wealth by any means. Such covetous people neither spend in the name of Allah, nor possess the motivation to benefit the creation, nor do they spend generously even upon their own family and dependents.

If one studies the lives of capitalists, a very dreadful picture emerges.
