Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a believer is like the very first tender green shoot of a plant, which the wind bends; sometimes it makes it fall and sometimes it makes it stand upright, until death comes to it (i.e., it withers). And the example of a disbeliever is like the pine tree, which stands straight on its root; nothing bends it, and in the end, it is uprooted by a single gust." Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: «خامة» means weak.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2783)
The meaning of this hadith is that various kinds of difficulties and troubles continue to befall the Muslims like a delicate branch, but he endures them with patience and does not utter any word of ingratitude from his tongue. No matter how great the hardship, he does not let go of the garment of patience and gratitude. Through all these, his sins continue to be forgiven and his ranks are elevated. In contrast, a disbeliever or hypocrite is toppled by a single gust and, in an instant, the sun of his life sets. The example of the pine tree is given for this reason: it is hard, bends little in the wind, and if a strong wind blows, it is uprooted from its roots, just like the palm and date trees.
In summary, the believer is always afflicted with trials and tribulations, which become an expiation for his sins. The disbeliever and hypocrite face fewer hardships and troubles, and suddenly death overtakes them.
A believer should not be disheartened by sorrow, grief, or calamity; rather, he should consider it a favor and mercy from Allah Ta'ala and be certain that it is an expiation for his sins.
