Hadith 2782

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْمَدَائِنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ صَدَقَةٌ"، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَوْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ؟، قَالَ: "يَعْتَمِلُ بِيَدَيْهِ فَيَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ"، قَالُوا: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ؟، قَالَ: "يُعِينُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ الْمَلْهُوفَ"، قَالُوا: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ؟، قَالَ: "يَأْمُرُ بِالْخَيْرِ"، قَالُوا: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ؟، قَالَ: "يُمْسِكُ عَنِ الشَّرِّ، فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ".
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity is obligatory upon every Muslim." The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What if someone does not have the means or is unable to give charity? He said: "Then he should earn with his own hands, eat from that earning himself, and give charity." The narrator said: What if he still cannot give charity? He said: "Then he should help someone in need or distress." He said: Please tell us, what if he cannot do even that? He said: "Then he should enjoin good." It was asked: What if he cannot do even that? He said: "Then he should refrain from evil; that is his charity."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2781)

It is mentioned in Bukhari: to do a good deed, and in Musnad al-Tayalisi: to command a good word and to refrain from an evil deed. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has brought this hadith under the chapter “Upon every Muslim is charity” to encourage giving charity. When one does not have the ability to give financial charity, then whatever act can take its place is itself charity. For example, doing good deeds and benefiting others through one’s own self. When even this is not possible, then to assist someone in distress. And if even this is not possible, then to do any other righteous deed, such as removing something harmful from the path. The last level is to abandon evil, from which the Shari‘ah has prohibited. These too are acts of reward, and in this is consolation for the person who is completely incapable of performing good deeds.
