Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2780)
Yunus alayhis salam was a prophet whose mention has come in several places in the Noble Qur’an, and he is also called Dhu’n-Nun (the one of the fish): «﴿وَإِنَّيُونُسَلَمِنَالْمُرْسَلِينَ﴾ [الصافات : 139]». And in the ahadith related from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it is explicitly stated that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the leader of all the prophets, and thus it is permissible to say that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the best of all, but it should be said in such a manner that it does not entail any disrespect or disparagement of any prophet; the respect of all should be kept in view. This was from the humility of the Noble Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he forbade giving preference over Yunus alayhis salam.
