Hadith 2780

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is very bad for any one of you to say, 'I have forgotten such-and-such verse.' Rather, (he should say) 'It was made to be forgotten,' and continue reciting the Noble Qur'an, for its departure from the hearts of people is swifter than the escape of a camel."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2779)
In this hadith, the encouragement for the memorizers of the Qur’an (huffaz al-Qur’an) to continuously recite the Noble Qur’an is explained through an example, which is a very eloquent style of the tongue of Prophethood. If one abandons the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, he will soon forget it. Saying “I forgot” has been prohibited because Allah alone is the Creator of all the actions of the servant, even though actions are also attributed to the servant. The purpose is that by attributing it to oneself, it is as if one retains personal control, i.e., “I forgot.”
