Hadith 278

Imam Sha'bi and Imam Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on them) narrated that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would narrate any hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the days, his face would turn red and he would say: «هكذا أو نحوه، هكذا أونحوه» (that is, in this way or with similar meaning the Prophet said).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 277)

From all these narrations, we learn about the caution exercised by the Companions (Sahabah) and the Followers (Tabi'in), and also that they were fearful of saying: "The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said this," while in reality there might have been some deficiency in their memory and they might fall into destruction. Therefore, they preferred to say that Alqamah or Abdullah said this, or that he said something to this effect, or something similar or resembling it, or they would say: «أو كما قال صلى اللّٰه عليه وسلم».
