Ibn Muhairiz said: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Jum'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion: "Narrate to us a hadith which you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "Listen! I will tell you a very good hadith. We ate lunch with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at noon, and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Can anyone be better than us? We accepted Islam and fought in jihad with you.' He replied: 'Yes, (better than you are) those people who will come after you and will believe in me even though they have not seen me.'"

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2778)
The consensus of the scholars is that among humankind, after the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Uthman, and Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhum, and after them all the male and female Companions (Sahabah and Sahabiyyat), are superior to all Muslims who will come until the Day of Judgment. There is an authentic hadith: «لَوْأَنْفَقَأَحَدُكُمْمِثْلَأُحُدٍذَهَبًامَابَلَغَأَحَدٌمُدَّهُمْوَلَانَصِيْفَهُ» ([أحمد 6/6], [مجمع الزوائد 16/10], [عاصم 478/2]), meaning: If any one of you were to give in charity gold equal to (the mountain of) Uhud, even then he would not attain the reward equal to a mudd (a measure, approximately 2 ratl) of (charity) given by these Companions, or even half of it.
There are many hadiths and verses regarding the virtues of the Companions. Here, in this hadith, there is indeed a certain virtue for the Muslims who come later, but in terms of reward and ranks, they cannot be superior to the Companions. However, as a result of performing righteous deeds (a‘maal salihah), those who come later will certainly attain nearness to Allah and His Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
From this hadith, there is also evidence for the increase and decrease of faith (iman), and also that for the Muslims who come later, there is glad tidings and reassurance—they should not despair, for there are high ranks for them as well.
