أَخْبَرَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَزِّمِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِسَخْلَةٍ جَرْبَاءَ قَدْ أَخْرَجَهَا أَهْلُهَا . قَالَ: "تُرَوْنَ هَذِهِ هَيِّنَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ؟". قَالُوا: نَعَمْ . قَالَ: "وَاللَّهِ لَلدُّنْيَا أَهْوَنُ عَلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a scabby goat kid which its owner had thrown out. He said: "Do you know how insignificant (despised or of little value) this is to its owner?" They replied: Yes. He said: "By Allah, the world is even more insignificant to Allah than this kid is to its owner."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2771)
In this hadith, there is a teaching of indifference towards the world, as the world holds no significance in the sight of Allah. The world is merely a place of action (dar al-‘amal), while the Hereafter is the place of recompense (dar al-jaza’). The place of action is destined to end in a very short time, but the Hereafter is better and everlasting: «﴿وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ [العنكبوت : 64]» “Indeed, the true life is the life of the Hereafter, if only they knew.”
