Hadith 2769

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "مَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا وَمَعَهُ قَرِينُهُ مِنَ الْجِنِّ، وَقَرِينُهُ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ". قَالُوا: وَإِيَّاكَ ؟ . قَالَ: "نَعَمْ وَإِيَّايَ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَانَنِي عَلَيْهِ فَأَسْلَمَ" . قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ: مِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ: أَسْلَمَ: اسْتَسْلَمَ . يَقُولُ: ذَلَّ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is none among you except that a shaitan (jinn) who is his companion and a companion from among the angels has been appointed for him." The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is it the same with you as well?" He replied: "Yes, there is a shaitan with me as well, but Allah Almighty has helped me against him and he has become obedient to me, or I am protected from him."
Imam Muhammad al-Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Aslam means he has become obedient.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2768)
And some scholars have said «أُسْلَمَ», meaning: I am protected from his mischief; now he does not command me to do anything evil except for good things.
The Prophet of Islam (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has made it clear that with every human being, a devil (shaytan) and an angel (malak) are attached.
The devil incites towards evil deeds, and the angel calls towards good deeds.
Now it is within the human being’s choice whose command he obeys.
