Hadith 2767

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «﴿وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيْرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِيْنَ﴾» (Ash-Shu'ara: 214/26), "And warn your closest relatives," the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people of Quraysh! Save your souls from Allah (by doing righteous deeds), I will be of no avail to you before Allah (that is, I will not be able to do anything against Allah’s will). O sons of Abd Manaf! I will be of no avail to you before Allah. O Abbas (the Prophet’s uncle), son of Abdul Muttalib! I will be of no avail to you before Allah. O Safiyyah (the Prophet’s aunt), daughter of Abdul Muttalib! I will be of no avail to you before Allah. O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Ask me for whatever you wish of my wealth, but I will be of no avail to you before Allah."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2766)

In exact accordance with the noble verse, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam first warned his close family and clan members of Allah’s punishment, then specifically addressed the particular individuals among his forefathers—his uncles and aunts—and then, most specifically, informed his own daughter of this reality: In this world, I can fulfill your requests, but in the Hereafter, I will not be able to benefit you in any way. There, only one’s deeds and Allah’s mercy will be of use: «﴿وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَأُولَئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ نَقِيرًا﴾ [النساء : 124]» “Whoever is a believer, male or female, and performs righteous deeds, then surely such people will enter Paradise, and not even the amount of a date pit’s groove will their right be diminished.”
