Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2761)
This hadith explains that every human being can make mistakes and commit sins. If someone commits a sin, he should immediately repent, because Allah’s favored servants are those who, if they do make a mistake, immediately repent. And whoever repents sincerely, Allah the Exalted forgives him in such a way as if he had never committed the sin at all.
Allah the Exalted says: «﴿وَتُوبُواإِلَىاللّٰهِجَمِيعًاأَيُّهَالْمُؤْمِنُونَلَعَلَّكُمْتُفْلِحُونَ﴾ [النور : 31]» “O believers! All of you turn to Allah in repentance so that you may be successful.”
And the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “O people! Repent to Allah. I myself repent and seek forgiveness from Allah seventy times, a hundred times a day.” See: Hadith number (2758).
Repentance at the time of death is not accepted. The command of Allah the Exalted is: “Repentance is not accepted from those who continue to do evil deeds until, when death comes to one of them, he says (at that time): I have now repented.” [النساء : 18].
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: The servant’s repentance is accepted as long as his soul does not reach his throat at the time of death, or as he (alayhis-salam) said.
Therefore, one should always repent and seek forgiveness. Lest it happens that: While the hand of regret is about to be raised... the door of repentance may be closed In the fierce wind of sins... the lamp of life may finally be extinguished
