Hadith 2758

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My tongue was unrestrained with my family (I would say whatever came to my tongue), but I would not speak badly to anyone else. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this (with regret), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where are you from seeking forgiveness? That is, why do you not seek forgiveness? I myself seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times every day."

Abu Ishaq said: I narrated this hadith to Sayyiduna Abu Burdah and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, the sons of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them both), so both of them said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times every day and I say: «استغفر اللّٰھ و أتوب إليه»."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2757)

Istighfar: It means to seek forgiveness.

Every person should always continue to repent (tawbah) and seek forgiveness (istighfar).

Here is our Prophet, the leader of all prophets and messengers (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), whose past and future sins were all forgiven, who was already pardoned, yet he would seek forgiveness seventy times and even a hundred times.

Allah Ta’ala has also said: « ﴿اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ﴾ [نوح : 10]» In another place He said: «﴿وَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنْتَ فِيهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ﴾ [الأنفال : 33]» Translation: “And Allah will not punish them while you are among them, and Allah will not punish them while they seek forgiveness.”

That is, those who continue to seek forgiveness will not be afflicted with punishment.
