Hadith 2755

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How many are there who fast, but gain nothing from their fasting except hunger and thirst, and how many are there who stand in prayer at night, but gain nothing from their standing except sleeplessness."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2754)

From this hadith, it is understood that if fasting (sawm) and night prayer (tahajjud) are performed without their conditions, limits, and restrictions, then there is no benefit in them except that the fasting person remains thirsty and the one performing tahajjud remains awake.

In order to attain the true reward of fasting and prayer, it is necessary to avoid vain talk, obscenity (rafath), sin and immorality (fisq wa fujur), and ostentation and showing off (riya wa namud).

It is mentioned in the hadith that whoever does not give up evil speech and evil deeds, Allah has no need for him to remain hungry and thirsty.

Sayyiduna Abu Darda radi Allahu anhu said: When you fast, then your tongue, your ears, and your eyes should also fast, and the day of your fasting should not be the same as the day when you are not fasting.
