Hadith 2740

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any one of you were to fill his stomach with pus and blood, that would be better for him than to fill it with poetry."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2739)

The warning mentioned here is intended for such poetry and ghazals that are filled with themes of illicit love and immorality, or in which there is undue praise or blame. Composing and memorizing good poetry is not included in this warning. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself permitted Sayyiduna Hassan ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhu) to compose poetry, and from this portion of the hadith «إِنَّ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ حِكْمَةً», the permissibility of poetry and poetic composition is also derived.

And Allah knows best.
