Hadith 2730

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most beloved names to Allah Almighty are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 2728 to 2730)

It is recommended (mustahabb) to give names such as Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, likewise Abdul-Quddus and Abdus-Salam, etc., because in these types of names, servitude and worship (‘ubudiyyah and bandagi) are manifest. After this, it is also better to give the names of the noble Prophets (anbiya’ kiram). However, those names whose meanings are not good or are the names of evil people, such as Fir‘awn, Haman, Shaddad, Shaytan, etc., are disliked (makruh). And names from which shirk (polytheism) is apparent are unanimously prohibited, such as Abdun-Nabi, Abdul-Husayn, etc.

Some scholars have considered it disliked (makruh) to give names like Ghulam Muhammad, Ghulam Ali, and Ghulam Husayn.

Perhaps this is because every servant and slave is a servant of Allah Ta‘ala; attributing servitude and slavery to any created being is not appropriate.

And Allah knows best.
