Hadith 2725

It is narrated from Mu’adh bin Anas, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever, when wearing new clothes, says: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ كَسَانِيْ هٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيْهٖ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّىْ وَلَا قُوَّةٍ», his past sins will be forgiven.”

(Translation) All praise is due to Allah alone, Who has clothed me with this garment and granted it to me without any power or strength from myself.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2724)

It is narrated in Abu Dawood: Whoever recites this supplication (translation): “All praise is due to Allah alone, Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any power or strength from myself,” then all his past and future sins are forgiven.

Reciting this supplication when wearing new clothes is Sunnah and recommended. In it, there is gratitude, praise, and glorification of Allah, and in this hadith, there is the glad tidings of forgiveness of minor sins.

It should be noted that repentance from major sins is obligatory.
