It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Travel is a portion of torment; it prevents a person from sleeping, eating, and drinking. Therefore, when one has fulfilled his need, he should hasten to return to his home."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2704)
The command to return home quickly after completing one’s work was given at a time when one had to face extreme hardships and dangers during travel, and indeed, travel used to be a piece of torment. Although nowadays there are many conveniences in travel, still, the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam remains valid in its place.
Whether one travels by train, motor vehicle, or airplane, one still faces many hardships and encounters many unfavorable conditions, in which one loses awareness of eating, drinking, and sleeping, and it spontaneously escapes from the mouth: “Travel is indeed a piece of torment.”
In any case, it is understood from the hadith that a person should return home as soon as possible after finishing his work.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has said in [فتح الباري 622/3] that from this, the dislike of staying away from one’s family without necessity is understood, and it is established that returning quickly to one’s family is recommended (mustahabb), especially at such a time when, due to a person’s absence, there is a fear of loss for the children and family. And there is great benefit and wisdom in a person staying with his family... etc.
