Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2698)
Whoever spends anything on his wife and children with the intention of accountability (i.e., seeking reward from Allah), he will receive the reward of giving charity (sadaqah).
From this hadith, it is understood that it is obligatory (fard) upon a man to provide sustenance and maintenance (nafaqah) for his wife and children.
In the hadith of Sayyidah Umm Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anha, it is mentioned that if the husband does not provide the necessary expenses, then the woman may, in a reasonable manner, take her and her children's expenses from her husband's wealth without his knowledge.
