It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some people from the Ansar who were sitting on the road. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you must sit here, then guide the one who is lost, return the greeting of peace, and help the oppressed.”
Shu’bah said: Abu Ishaq did not hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2689)
Markets and pathways are such places where a person, by sitting there, becomes heedless of the remembrance of Allah, gets involved in backbiting and slander, looks at women, and becomes entangled in many tribulations. Therefore, it has been commanded that if sitting there is necessary, then one should avoid the aforementioned actions and deeds. As is mentioned in the Sahihayn, if sitting is absolutely necessary, then fulfill the rights of the pathway, and that is: lower your gaze, remove obstacles from the path, respond to greetings, enjoin good speech, and forbid evil words or deeds. If one is unable to do these things, then it is better not to sit in the pathway at all.
