Sayyar said: I was walking with Thabit al-Banani, and when he passed by children, he would greet them with salam. Then he narrated a hadith that he was with Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), and when they passed by children, he would greet them with salam. And Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he passed by children, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with salam.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2671)
Humility is reflected in greeting children with salam, and in this there is consideration for their feelings and a supplication for their well-being. In addition, the importance of salam is also made clear to them. Therefore, greeting children with salam is Sunnah and the practice of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
