Hadith 2666

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and knocked at his door. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who is it?" I said: "It is I." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'It is I,' 'It is I,'" as if he disliked it.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2665)
Or perhaps "I, I" was not an answer to the question of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
He should have said, "I am Jabir," but did not mention his name; that is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam disliked the response "I, I."
We have seen and heard the muhaddith and mufti of this era, Samahat al-Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah, when someone would ask on the telephone, "Who are you?" he would, without hesitation, say: "I am Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz." Neither would there be any frown on his face nor was any displeasure ever observed.
Some people consider stating their "honorable name" to be beneath their dignity.
