It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to enter upon Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), but he was not granted permission, so he returned. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Why did you go back? He replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The one seeking permission should ask for permission three times; if he is granted permission, he may enter, otherwise he should return." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You must bring a witness for this, otherwise I will deal very harshly with you. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us while I was also present in the mosque with a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) was very anxious due to the warning of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He stood among us and said: I ask you by Allah, if anyone has heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), let him bear witness with me. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I raised my head and said: Inform Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have also heard this along with you, and other companions also supported him. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) became happy.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2664)

In this hadith, the best principle of the etiquette of meeting and seeking permission (isti’dhan) has been stated.

Before entering any house, school, office, etc., one should seek permission three times.

Whatever the method may be, if the owner of the house grants permission, then one may enter; otherwise, one should return. It is not correct to enter without permission, because every person has secrets and circumstances due to which he may not like anyone’s intrusion. And those people who come and go in the house frequently do not need to seek permission every time; however, before Fajr, at noon when it is the time for siesta (qaylulah), and after the ‘Isha prayer, it is necessary to seek permission, as is mentioned in the noble verse: «﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِيَسْتَأْذِنْكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا الْحُلُمَ مِنْكُمْ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُمْ مِنَ الظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنْ بَعْدِ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ .....﴾ [النور : 58]».

Translation: “O believers! Your slaves and those among you who have not reached puberty must seek your permission at three times: before the prayer of Fajr, at noon when you put off your clothes, and after the prayer of ‘Isha...”

In this hadith, the awe and authority, insight, and extreme caution of Amir al-Mu’minin Sayyiduna ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu in narration and acceptance of hadith is established, so that everyone may exercise caution in attributing anything to the Messenger of Guidance, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

There is no room here for doubting the integrity (‘adalah) of Sayyiduna Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu, nor for rejecting the acceptance of a solitary report (khabar wahid), as the scholars have explained in detail.
