It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade taking the price of the water (semen) of a male (animal).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2658)

It is prohibited to take a wage for mating a female animal (such as a mare, she-camel, she-donkey, cow, or goat, etc.) with a male animal (such as a stallion, camel, donkey, bull, or goat, etc.).

However, if the owner of the female animal gives something voluntarily, without any prior condition, as a gesture of goodwill, then accepting it is permissible. Likewise, it is recommended (mustahabb) to lend the male animal gratuitously.

And a group of scholars has permitted taking a wage as well, so that the lineage (of animals) is not discontinued. According to these ahadith, the jurists (fuqaha) hold the view of its prohibition.
