It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Mas'ud bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to our gathering and narrated a hadith that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you estimate (the fruits on the trees), then take (two-thirds) and leave one-third; if not one-third, then leave one-fourth."
The usual practice was that, for zakat, when the fruit was still on the tree, its estimate would be made, and after it was harvested, one-tenth of it would be taken from the owner as zakat. It was instructed to leave a third or at least a quarter so that the owner would have some leeway and could offer it to neighbors and friends.
In some narrations, the word "fajuddu" appears, which means to pluck dates.
