Hadith 2634

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) wife sent a bowl in which there was tharid, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of another wife. The lady of that house struck the bowl with her hand and it broke. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) joined it together and began putting the tharid back into it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying, “Eat, your mother has become jealous.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) waited until a sound bowl was brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that bowl to the wife whose bowl had been broken.

Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is also our opinion (i.e., if someone breaks another’s bowl, he should return a sound bowl in its place).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2633)

What happened was that it was the turn of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was staying in her chamber. She was preparing food for him when another wife sent a bowl of tharid (meat and bread stew) for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha found this unpleasant, and in a moment of anger, struck it with her hand; the bowl fell, broke, and the tharid also spilled.

This was a natural matter, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not hold her accountable. But look at the beautiful character of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: he did not show displeasure, nor did he scold or rebuke her. Rather, he himself gathered the fallen food and said to the household, "Eat, your mother has become jealous."

In this, there is appreciation for sustenance, good management, and the teaching that if a gift from one wife comes to another, it should be accepted. And then, if someone suffers a loss, there is the command to make amends for it.

Subhan Allah! How pure is the character and teaching of our beloved Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
