Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is obligatory upon the hand to return what it takes.”
Hadith Takhrij
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2631)
Although this hadith is weak in its chain of narration, its meaning is correct.
Allah Ta’ala says: «﴿إِنَّاللّٰهَيَأْمُرُكُمْأَنْتُؤَدُّواالْأَمَانَاتِإِلَىأَهْلِهَا﴾ [النساء : ۵8]» “Allah Ta’ala commands that trusts be rendered to their owners.”
That is, when you take something as a trust (amanah) from someone, return it exactly as it was.
Betrayal in trust (amanah) is a major sin (kabirah), as will be mentioned ahead.
The purpose of this chapter is, most likely, that the author rahimahullah is alluding to this hadith: «الْعَارِيَةُمُؤَدَّاةٌ» that a borrowed item (ariyah) should be returned.
This has been narrated by [ابن ماجه 2398] and others, but there is a narrator in it who has been criticized.
