Abdullah bin Ka'b narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that he demanded his debt from Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad in the Prophet's Mosque. Their voices became somewhat loud until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was in his chamber, heard them. He (peace be upon him) came out to them and called out: "O Ka'b!" He replied: I am present, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace be upon him) gestured and said: "Forgive half of the debt." Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have forgiven half of the debt. He (peace be upon him) said: "Ibn Abi Hadrad! Get up and pay the remaining half of the debt."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2622)
From this hadith, it is understood that if the debtor is in hardship and poverty, then leniency should be shown towards him, and as much concession as one can give, should be given. This is a means of attaining the pleasure of Allah, as will be mentioned ahead.
