Hadith 2621

It is narrated from Suwaid bin Qais that I and Makhramah ‘Abdi brought cloth from Bahrain to Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to us while walking and bargained with us for trousers or bought trousers from us. There was a man who weighed (goods) for a fee. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: Weigh and weigh accurately (i.e., do not weigh less). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) left, the people said: That was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2620)

From this hadith, the humility of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is established, as well as the fact that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would go to the market, walk on foot, engage in buying and selling, and impart good teachings. Furthermore, it is established that purchasing a pair of trousers (pajama) is permissible, and that one should not give less when weighing, rather giving more is a source of blessing, while giving less is a cause of punishment.

وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَوْ وَزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ﴾ [المطففين : 1-3]» Translation: "Woe to those who give less in measure and weight, those who, when they take measure from people, take in full, but when they give by measure or weight to others, they give less."

That is, they have separate measures for taking and giving, and they cheat in weighing and measuring. This is a very grave moral disease, the consequence of which is destruction in this world and the Hereafter.

There is a hadith: Any nation that cheats in measure and weight, drought, hard labor, and the oppression of rulers are imposed upon them.
