Hadith 2615

Abu Ash’ath San’ani said: During the rule of Sayyiduna Mu’awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), people began to sell gold and silver vessels until the time of receiving their salaries (that is, they started buying and selling gold or silver vessels on credit with dirhams and dinars). Then Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, dates for dates, barley for barley, and salt for salt except equal for equal and hand to hand. So whoever gives more or takes more, then it is riba (usury).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2614)
By «إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ» is meant that when a share from the charities is received, its price will be taken, that is, the command is to sell it on credit, as is also explicitly stated in the narration of Sahih Muslim.
In this hadith as well, it is clarified that none of the aforementioned six commodities should be given or taken in buying and selling on credit or with an increase or decrease, otherwise this will become riba (usury). That is why, when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu gave the ruling to sell gold vessels for dinars (which are made of gold) and silver vessels for dirhams (which are made of silver) on credit, that their price would be paid upon receiving the salary, Sayyiduna Ubadah ibn as-Samit radi Allahu anhu took strong notice of this and stated that this is haram (forbidden) and riba (usury). In fact, in Sahih Muslim there is further detail that when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu said, "We have not heard this from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam," then in even stronger words Sayyiduna Ubadah radi Allahu anhu said: "By Allah! I will certainly state this, whether Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu likes it or not, no matter how I am treated." And the statement of Sayyiduna Ubadah radi Allahu anhu was correct; his not having heard it does not necessitate that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not say it.
