Hadith 2613

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed the brother of Banu 'Adi as an official (officer or collector) for Khaybar. He brought back Janib (a type of good quality date) from there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Are all the dates of Khaybar like this (excellent)?" He replied: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! Not all are like this. We give two sa' of Jam' (a type of inferior date) in exchange for one sa' of this (Janib)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so. Rather, buy and sell in equal measure (weight and volume), or sell the inferior dates and buy Janib (good dates) with its price. And do the same with items that are measured by weight."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2612)

That is, either sell your collected dates in equal measure, or in exchange for them, take another item that is sold by weight from a different category, then buy better quality dates with that. In this way, there will be no suspicion of usury (riba) or interest.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: The person who was appointed as the administrator over Khaybar was named Suwad bin Ghaziyyah.

From this hadith, it is understood that any commodity, even if it is of inferior quality, must be weighed equally against the superior quality commodity, or the inferior item should be sold separately and with its money, the superior quality commodity should be purchased. And selling the same commodity with an increase or decrease (tafadul) in quantity constitutes a form of usury (riba) and interest, which is absolutely forbidden.

And Allah knows best.
