أَخْبَرَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ بِلَالٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ عِنْدِي مُدُّ تَمْرٍ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَجَدْتُ أَطْيَبَ مِنْهُ صَاعًا بِصَاعَيْنِ، فَاشْتَرَيْتُ مِنْهُ، فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: "مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكَ هَذَا يَا بِلَالُ ؟". قُلْتُ: اشْتَرَيْتُ صَاعًا بِصَاعَيْنِ . قَالَ: "رُدَّهُ وَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا تَمْرَنَا".
Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I had a mudd of dates belonging to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I got better quality dates in exchange for one sa’ with two sa’s, and I bought them. I brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “Where did you get these dates from?” I said: I bought one sa’ in exchange for two sa’s. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Return them and give us back our dates.”
Brief Explanation

From this hadith, it is understood that if the commodity is of the same kind, then any increase or decrease in its sale and purchase is not permissible, because this is precisely riba (usury). That is why, when Sayyiduna Bilal radi Allahu anhu gave two sa’ of dates in exchange for one sa’ of dates, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had it returned. Further clarification of this is coming ahead.
