Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not seek knowledge for three things: so that you may argue with the foolish, or dispute with the scholars, or turn people’s faces towards yourself (i.e., make them your followers). Seek with your words only the reward that is with Allah, which will remain forever, and whatever is besides that will perish.

(Commentary on Hadiths 259 to 261)
In the marfu‘ hadith it is stated: «لَاتَعَلَّمُواالْعِلْمَلِتُبَاهُوابِهِالْعُلَمَاءَ،أَوْلِتُمَارُوابِهِالسُّفَهَاءَ،أَوْلِتَصْرِفُواوُجُوهَالنَّاسِإِلَيْكُمْ،فَمَنْفَعَلَذَلِكَفَهُوَفِيالنَّارِ.» Meaning, “Whoever acquires knowledge in order to argue with the scholars, to dispute with the ignorant, and to attract people’s attention to himself, then he will enter Hell.” See: [ترمذي 2654], [ابن ماجه 259-260] This narration has been declared authentic by Shaykh al-Albani in [صحيح الجامع 7247].
