Hadith 2605

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the verse about "usury" was revealed at the end of Surah Al-Baqarah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and recited it to the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Then he prohibited the trade of alcohol.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2604)
The definition of «خمر» (intoxicant), its ruling, and the explanation of the prescribed punishment (hadd) have already been discussed in the Book of Drinks (Kitab al-Ashribah) and the Book of Legal Punishments (Kitab al-Hudud). In this chapter, the discussion is about the trade of intoxicants. When intoxicants are forbidden (haram), then their trade is also forbidden.
In the verses of Surah al-Baqarah: «﴿وَأَحَلَّ اللّٰهُ الْبَيْعَ .....﴾ [البقرة : 275-280]» this is mentioned, meaning that trade and commerce are lawful, but usurious transactions and the trade of forbidden things such as intoxicants and swine, etc., are forbidden. The prohibition of intoxicants is mentioned in Surah al-Ma'idah, which was revealed much earlier, but the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, while mentioning the verses about usury (riba) at the end of his life, reiterated the prohibition of intoxicants so that it would be known to everyone.
