Hadith 2602

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not go out to meet those bringing grain into the city from outside, and whoever goes and meets such a caravan and buys something from them, then the seller (owner) has the choice, after reaching the market, (whether to keep the transaction or cancel it)."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2601)

In this hadith, there is a prohibition against meeting those who come from the villages to the city with goods for the purpose of selling, and buying their items at cheap prices due to their lack of awareness.

A Muslim should be the well-wisher, sympathizer, and supporter of another Muslim. Such actions promote selfishness and self-interest, strengthening the tendency to prioritize one’s own benefit and to unjustly take advantage of the ignorance of unaware people.

The command to not meet the caravans coming to the city is given so that the seller is protected from deception and harm, and is safeguarded from loss and trickery. Likewise, those who come to the market to purchase goods are able to obtain benefit and profit. It is a common practice that caravans sell their goods at somewhat lower prices than the general market rate.

In any case, Islam has prohibited deception and has forbidden going out to meet the caravans so that simple and straightforward people do not suffer loss due to being deceived. If such a sale and purchase does occur, then upon reaching the market, the owner of the goods has the choice to either uphold the sale or annul it.

And Allah knows best.
