Hadith 26

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ نُبَيْحٍ الْعَنَزِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا: غَزَوْنَا أَوْ سَافَرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِضْعَةَ عَشَرَ وَمِائَتَانِ فَحَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "هَلْ فِي الْقَوْمِ مِنْ طَهُورٍ ؟"، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ يَسْعَى، بِإِدَاوَةٍ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ مَاءٍ، لَيْسَ فِي الْقَوْمِ مَاءٌ غَيْرُهُ،"فَصَبَّهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي قَدَحٍ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ وَتَرَكَ الْقَدَحَ"، فَرَكِبَ النَّاسُ ذَلِكَ الْقَدَحَ، وَقَالُوا: تَمَسَّحُوا تَمَسَّحُوا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "عَلَى رِسْلِكُمْ"حِينَ سَمِعَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ ذَلِكَ،"فَوَضَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَفَّهُ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالْقَدَحِ"، وَقَالَ: "بِسْمِ اللَّهِ"، ثُمَّ قَالَ: "أَسْبِغُوا الطُّهُورَ"، فَوَالَّذِي هُوَ ابْتَلَانِي بِبَصَرِي لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْعُيُونَ، عُيُونَ الْمَاءِ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصَابِعِهِ فَلَمْ يَرْفَعْهَا حَتَّى تَوَضَّئُوا أَجْمَعُونَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a battle, and at that time our number was more than 210. The time for prayer arrived, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Does anyone have any water?” A man came running with a small bucket in which there was a little water, and the people had no water besides that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) poured it into a large bowl, then he performed ablution thoroughly from it and moved away, leaving the bowl there. The people rushed to the bowl saying, “Bathe, bathe!” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard them saying this, he said: “Wait.” Then he placed his hand over the water and the bowl and said: “Say Bismillah.” Then he said: “Purify yourselves well.” The narrator said: By the One Who afflicted me with the trial of my eyes, I saw the springs of water gushing forth from between his fingers, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not remove his fingers until all of them had completed their ablution.

Hadith Commentary:

Previously, in the narration from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib radi Allahu anhu, it was mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had a bucket of water brought from a well, rinsed his mouth with it, then supplicated and poured it back into the well. Whereas in the hadith of Jabir radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned that he placed his hand in a vessel of water, and water began to gush forth from between his fingers like a spring. In reality, there are several occasions where miracles concerning water occurred.

One such incident is narrated by Jabir radi Allahu anhu: At the time of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, there was no water at the time of the ‘Asr prayer, and only a little water remained in a vessel. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam placed his hand in that vessel, spread his fingers, and said:
“O you who wish to perform ablution (wudu), Allah has placed blessing in it, come and perform ablution from it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5639)
Its details are found in Musnad Ahmad, that at the time of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, a man brought a small amount of water. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam poured it into a large tub, and after performing ablution (wudu) from it, it was left for a while. When people rushed to perform ablution from it, he instructed them to remain calm and composed. Then he placed his hand in it, and water began to flow from between his fingers. He said:
“Perform it thoroughly.”

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has also mentioned the possibility that when water began to gush forth from the blessed fingers of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, the people drank to their fill and performed ablution (wudu). The water that remained at that time, he poured into the water (of the well), and due to the abundance of water, it also began to surge. In this way, the incidents of al-Bara’ and Jabir radi Allahu anhuma can be considered as one and the same event.

Because Allah Ta'ala caused a spring to flow from your (the Prophet's) fingers, then what shortage of water could there have been?
This was your miracle.

Hadith Commentary:

Hudaybiyyah is a location that marks the western boundary of the Haram of Makkah.
It is situated about ten miles from Makkah al-Mukarramah and approximately thirty miles from Jeddah.
There was a large, crooked tree there, due to which this place was given its name.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) set out with the Muhajirun, Ansar, and other tribes with the intention of performing ‘umrah, but he was stopped at the location of Hudaybiyyah.
This incident took place in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, in the sixth year after Hijrah.


In this hadith, a great miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is mentioned: that Allah, the Exalted, caused a spring of water to flow from his fingers.
After that, there was no shortage of water.
According to the statement of Jabir (radi Allahu anhu), it was sufficient to quench the thirst of one hundred thousand people.

Hadith Commentary:
From this hadith, the permissibility of drinking blessed (tabarruk) water is established.
By the blessing of the miracle of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), this water increased to such an extent that it satisfied fifteen hundred noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum).
And the narration of Husayn has been connected by Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah in the Book of Maghazi, and the narration of Amr ibn Murrah has been connected by Muslim and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah.
Qastallani said that at this point, three-quarters of Sahih al-Bukhari have been completed, and the final fourth quarter remains.
O Allah! Just as You have enabled me to complete these three quarters, enable me to complete this fourth quarter as well by my pen; nothing is difficult for You.
O Allah! Accept my supplication, and grant countless blessings in this world and the Hereafter to those brothers who have served the words of Your beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and forgive all of us.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Extravagance in the use of water is generally prohibited, but extravagance is not prohibited when consuming blessed items. There is no harm in consuming them in greater quantity, nor does any aspect of dislike (karahah) arise from this.

(2)
In ordinary circumstances, one third of the stomach should be for water, but this restriction does not apply when drinking blessed water, because the need for blessing (barakah) is greater than the need for satiety. Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was also aware of this matter, yet he did not prohibit Jabir (radi Allahu anhu) from it.

Benefits and Issues:
Sakinah refers to tranquility of the heart and inner peace, which is the result of Allah Ta'ala's grace and mercy. The recitation of the Qur'an is a means of Allah Ta'ala's mercy, and in this hadith, it has been described in a particular form. For this reason, Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has written that Sakinah is one of the creations of Allah Ta'ala, which becomes a cause of serenity and mercy, and along with it are angels.

In this hadith, there is mention of the Pledge of Ridwan (Bay‘at al-Ridwan), which took place beneath a tree at the time when the rumor of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu had spread. From this hadith, the virtue of the Mujahideen and the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘een is established.
