Hadith 2569

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Ma’bad Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Wabisah: “Have you come to ask about virtue and sin?” I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) joined his fingers together (made a fist) and struck it upon his chest and said: “Ask your soul and your heart. Virtue is that which the soul is at ease with and the heart feels tranquil about, and sin is that which causes uneasiness in the soul and hesitation in the heart, even if people give you a fatwa (legal verdict) permitting it.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2568)

In this hadith, it is explained that virtue is that upon which the heart is at ease, and there is no fear or apprehension in doing it. Similarly, sin and evil are those actions in the performance of which the heart feels unease.

This hadith indicates that if human nature has not been corrupted due to a bad environment and evil company, it guides a person towards what is right and restrains from evils.

In this hadith, there is a miracle of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and a proof of his truthfulness as a prophet, in that he understood what was about to be asked even before the question was posed. Furthermore, it shows that a person’s heart is the greatest mufti (jurisconsult).

A person should ensure that his heart remains illuminated with the light of faith (iman), so that it continues to guide him correctly.
