Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith to me that on the day of Khaybar, many companions were martyred. People began to say: So-and-so and so-and-so are martyrs, until they mentioned a man and said that he was a martyr. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never! I saw him in the Hellfire, in a cloak or a sheet which he had stolen from the spoils of war." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O son of Khattab! Stand up and announce among the people that only the believers will enter Paradise." So I stood up and went and made the announcement among the people.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2524)
From this hadith, it is understood that stealing even the smallest thing from the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanīmah) is a very grave crime and sin, which is forbidden (haram), and there is no distinction between little or much in this matter.
Furthermore, whoever commits ghulul (embezzlement or theft from the spoils), betrayal, or theft, he will not be called a martyr (shaheed); rather, this ghulul is tantamount to disbelief (kufr), and whoever commits disbelief will not enter Paradise (Jannah). There is consensus (ijma‘) of all the scholars on this, and only those who are trustworthy (amanat-dar) will enter Paradise, not those who betray (khiyanat karne wale).
