Hadith 2477

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not wish to encounter the enemy in battle, but rather ask Allah for safety and well-being. And when you do meet the enemy, then remain steadfast and remember Allah abundantly, and when they shout and cry out, you remain silent."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2476)

From this hadith, it is understood that as far as possible, one should avoid fighting, try to avert it, and pray for well-being (‘afiyah), because Islam is strongly opposed to discord and turmoil (fitnah wa fasad).

When there is no way to achieve reconciliation and the enemy is determined to fight, then one should not display cowardice; rather, one should stand firm and face the enemy with patience, steadfastness, and full strength. It is necessary to confront the enemy with perseverance and resolve.

Cowardice and fleeing are far removed from the dignity of a believer (mu’min), and in every situation, Allah should be remembered. Victory and help are in His hand alone, and one should not fear death. If martyrdom (shahadah) is decreed, then it is a great felicity, and no power can avert it; and if death is not destined, then surely one will return safely.

The disbeliever relies on the sword,
The believer, even without a blade, fights as a warrior.

Success and failure are in the hand of Allah Ta‘ala; in the face of His will, all instruments of war, cannons, guns, bombs, and explosions are rendered ineffective.
