Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best companions are four, and the best army is the one that has four thousand men, and the best detachment (military unit) is the one that has four hundred men, and if the number reaches twelve thousand and they act with patience and truthfulness, they will not be overcome due to being few."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2474)
It is better to have four companions and fellow travelers for a journey because if someone falls ill and wishes to make a will to any companion, then the others can serve as witnesses. And the scholars have written that five are even better than four, and even more than that is preferable, because the hadith mentions the minimum number.
And if there are twelve thousand, then they will never be overcome; and if they are overcome, it will not be due to their small number, but rather for some other reason—such as lack of patience, lack of sincerity, cowardice, or conceit and arrogance.
