Hadith 2466

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to race thoroughbred horses from Hafya to Thaniya, and non-thoroughbred horses from Thaniya to the Masjid of Banu Zuraiq. And Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was also among those who participated in this horse race.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadiths 2464 to 2466)

A “mudammar” horse is one that is first well-fed so that it becomes plump, then its grain and fodder are reduced, and it is kept tied in the stable with a covering so that its fat melts from the heat and, by sweating, its flesh decreases. Such a horse becomes very swift and strong for running.

“Hafya” and “Thaniyyah” are the names of two well-known places in Madinah Tayyibah, the distance between which was about six or seven kilometers.

The race of “mudammar” and “mudarrab” horses would be for such a distance, but non-mudammar horses were only raced from Thaniyyah to the Masjid Bani Zurayq, which is a distance of approximately one mile.

The horse is a very blessed animal.

Even in today’s mechanical age, the horse holds great importance and prestige for a civilized government.

The superiority of Arabian-bred horses is beyond need of explanation; even in the era of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), such competitive races were held to train horses. However, nowadays, the races held in cities under the name of “race” and upon which large sums are wagered as gambling, this is open gambling which is absolutely haram according to the Shari‘ah.
