Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Jihad is of two kinds: Whoever fights for the pleasure of Allah, obeys the leader (i.e., his officer or commander), spends his beloved wealth, treats his companion gently, and refrains from mischief and corruption, then his sleeping and waking will all be rewarded. And whoever fights for pride, showing off, and to be heard, disobeys the leader, and spreads corruption on the earth, then he will not return equal (i.e., his return will not be the same, neither reward nor punishment; rather, his return will be difficult, and he will be seized by punishment).”
