Hadith 2452

Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to participate in battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time we had nothing to eat except the leaves of trees. Because of this, our excrement became like that of goats, i.e., not mixed together (it would come out in pellets like goat droppings). But now the people of Banu Asad find faults in me. If this is the case, then I am indeed deprived and unfortunate, and all my good deeds have been wasted. (Samar and waraqul-hablah refer to the leaves of certain trees.)

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2451)

What happened was that the tribe of Banu Asad complained to the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, about him (i.e., Sayyiduna Sa'd radi Allahu anhu), alleging that he did not perform the prayer properly, did not judge between people at the correct time, etc. However, all of this was false, and for the person who made these accusations, Sayyiduna Sa'd radi Allahu anhu supplicated against him, and his supplication was accepted, and it did not leave that person until his death. He used to say: "I have been afflicted by Sa'd's supplication against me; this is the outcome of harassing the friends of Allah."

From this hadith, it is understood how many hardships the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and his noble Companions radi Allahu anhum endured in the early days of Islam, to the extent that they had nothing to eat, and would survive by chewing leaves and sucking on bark.
