It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Dying of plague is martyrdom, drowning (to death) is also martyrdom, dying while fighting in battle is martyrdom, dying of abdominal illness is martyrdom, and the death of women in postnatal bleeding is martyrdom.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2449)
That is, any person who dies due to plague, or due to a stomach illness, or by drowning in water, or a woman who dies in the state of postnatal bleeding (nifas), or a warrior who dies while fighting in battle—all of these will attain the rank of martyrdom (shahadah).
Provided that the person’s record is filled with righteous deeds, and he remains distant from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and bid‘ah (religious innovation), then the expectation of their martyrdom can be held. The rulings regarding these martyrs will differ, but their rank will be that of martyrs.
