Hadith 2447

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about the souls of the martyrs. And if it were not for Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), no one would have narrated a hadith to us. He said: The souls of the martyrs will be in the form of green birds near Allah on the Day of Resurrection, residing in lanterns hanging from the Throne, roaming freely in Paradise wherever they wish, and then returning to their lanterns. Their Lord (the Lord of all worlds) will look towards them and ask: "Do you need anything?" Those souls will say: We have no need for anything except that we be returned to the world and be killed again (i.e., be martyred again).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2446)

Every human being is alive due to the soul (ruh); when the soul departs, he is called dead.
What are souls? There are various opinions regarding this.
In the Noble Qur’an, it is stated: «﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي .....﴾ [الإسراء : 85]» meaning, “They ask you concerning the soul. Say: The soul is of the command of my Lord.”
Once the soul departs from a human body, it does not return to the world. Summoning souls, obtaining information from them, and seeking knowledge of past, present, and future events through them are false and futile matters that have no reality, and are entirely contrary to the creed of Islam.
Here, from this hadith, it is understood regarding the souls of the martyrs (shuhada) that they will be near the Lord of the worlds, in lanterns (qanadil) suspended from the Divine Throne (‘Arsh al-Ilahi), and this is a great honor and miracle for the martyrs.
From this hadith, the existence of Paradise (Jannah) is also established, as well as the proof of the Divine Throne (‘Arsh al-Ilahi). Furthermore, it is shown that due to the great honor, respect, and nearness to Allah, the martyr will wish to return to the world and be martyred again.
