Hadith 2442

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will admit three people into Paradise because of a single arrow: the one who made it, if he made it with a good intention, the one who handed it over, and the one who shot it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Practice archery, ride (horses), and archery is more beloved to me than riding." And he said: "Every game that a man plays is falsehood except for his shooting with his bow, his training of his horse, and his playing with his wife; these three are truth." And he said: "Whoever abandons archery after learning it has shown ingratitude to the one who taught him."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2441)

From this hadith, the virtue of archery and horse riding is established. Now, in place of the arrow, training and practice with weapons of war such as rifles, cannons, tanks, etc., is included, and traveling for their instruction and training is also considered part of jihad.

These three games are correct and legitimate, meaning they are not frivolous, useless, or false. In archery and the care and training of horses, a person prepares for jihad, and in the third—playing with one’s wife and children—there is affection, love, intimacy, and the fulfillment of the wife’s rights, through which the existence and continuity of the human race is maintained.
