أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ: أَنَّهُ تَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ سورة الأنفال آية 60 أَلَا إِنَّ "الْقُوَّةَ: الرَّمْيُ".
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this noble verse (translation): "Prepare against the disbelievers whatever strength you can." Listen: By strength is meant archery.
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2440)
That is, always continue to increase your strength and power in preparation for facing the enemies, and remain ever ready; do not be heedless of this, because it is not known at what time the enemy may launch an attack and you may have to face destruction and defeat.
In this hadith, there is encouragement for the art of warfare and the use of weapons. Now, in place of the bow and arrow, it is the training of guns, cannons, and other instruments of war, the learning of which is necessary so that they may be useful at the time of need.
