Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked: Which deed is the best? He replied: “To have faith in Allah and His Messenger.” It was asked: Which deed is best after that? He said: “Jihad in the way of Allah.” It was asked: Which deed is best after that? He said: “A Hajj that is accepted (by Allah).”
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2429)
By “Hajj Mabroor” is meant that pilgrimage (Hajj) in which there is absolutely no element of ostentation or sin; it is performed purely for the pleasure of Allah. After such a Hajj, the pilgrim’s previous state changes, and he becomes a personification of virtues. Undoubtedly, this is the true Hajj Mabroor, and it is regarding such a Hajj that it has been said: «اَلْحَجُّ الْمَبْرُوْرُ لَيْسَ لَهُ جَزَاءٌ إِلَّا الْجَنَّةَ. (أو كما قال صلى اللّٰه عليه وسلم)» — that is, the reward for Hajj Mabroor is nothing except Paradise.
From this hadith, it is understood that there is variation in the reward of righteous deeds; some deeds are good, and some are very good. Here, the best deed is to have faith in Allah and His Messenger. By faith (iman) is meant the affirmation of the existence of Allah, acknowledgment of His oneness and divinity, likewise, the acknowledgment that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a Prophet, Messenger, and chosen servant, and obedience and submission to Allah and His Messenger, and refraining from disobedience—this is true faith, and these are the requirements of faith, and this is the best of deeds.
After this, striving (jihad) in the path of Allah is superior to all other deeds, and then Hajj Mabroor is the best deed. Here, jihad has been given precedence over Hajj, even though Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and jihad is not included among these pillars. This is because the benefit of jihad extends beyond oneself to countless others, whereas Hajj is limited to the individual pilgrim.
At different times, questions were asked to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding the best of deeds, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave different answers, which were given in consideration of the circumstances of the questioner.
