Hadith 2428

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever goes out in the way of Allah, believing in Allah’s word as true, with the sole intention of striving in Allah’s path, then Allah is his guarantor: either Allah will admit him into Paradise as a martyr, or He will return him to his home with reward and spoils of war.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2427)

Jihad, in the linguistic sense, means effort, hardship, and striving. In the Shari‘ah, jihad refers to exerting one’s utmost effort in fighting for the protection and support of Islam and for the exaltation of the word of Allah, as well as in fighting against rebels. There are conditions and regulations for jihad, without which jihad is not valid. The most important condition is that the jihad must be for the pleasure of Allah, Exalted is He. Such jihad is beloved to Allah, and for such a mujahid (one who strives in jihad), there is the glad tidings of reward and honor in this world, and immense reward and recompense in the Hereafter.

From this hadith, it is understood that only that person is a mujahid in the path of Allah (fi sabilillah) whose going forth is for the pleasure of Allah. Allah, Exalted is He, has set two rewards for the mujahid fi sabilillah: if he attains martyrdom (shahadah), he will go straight to Paradise, will reach the embrace of the houris, and will be exempted from reckoning and accounting; and if he returns home safely, he will return with complete reward and with the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanīmah).
